Jury selection will get underway today in the case of a Willmar man involved in the death of army vet, 24 year old John Schlegel of Blomkest. 30 year old Richard Houske of Willmar declined a plea offer last week in court in Willmar. Houske is accused of selling fentanyl that led to Schlegel’s death last November. Houske is currently being held in the Kandiyohi Co. Jail. He pled guilty in March to felony 3rd degree sale of narcotics to others.

The Kandiyohi Co. Commissioners meet tomorrow in Willmar. The agenda will include talk on the master plan being developed for the county’s park system. Also, the highway 23 coalition, Safe Avenues, conditional use permits, Central Minnesota Jobs & Training Service and more will be discussed. Meeting time is 9am.

This past week-end saw the city of Willmar host the “7 -lag Stevne” (stev’-na), AKA “7 areas gathering”, at the conference center.The event is an annual conference that is held in different locations each year, a gathering of descendants of Norwegian immigrants from 7 areas of Norway. The conference included not only people tracing family history back to Norway, but stories of early settlers in the Kandiyohi Co. area, food, dance, along with various product and culture.

On Sunday the 29th AI Sheldon will host Carolyn Mankell Sowinski on AM 1590/FM105.7 at 7:30am on Community Roundtable. She’ll talk about the conference as well as her book, the Blizzard of 1873-a storm that took a dozen lives and disrupted many lives in the area.

 

An ATV accident in Meeker county injured two kids, one critically in an
accident last Friday evening around 9. 14 year old Sabrina Miller, from Arizona, driver of the ATV turned sharply, flipping the ATV on top of her and a 9 year old, Tyler Schindewolf of Cosmos, pinning them underneath. The 9 year old was able to call for help on a cell phone. Miller was airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical center in critical condition. Schindewolf was taken the HCMC by private party.

A Willmar driver hit two parked cars Friday on 5th St. SW in Willmar. The teen driver said they hit the gas instead of the brakes when slowing for people crossing the road. The driver was cited for an instructor’s permit violation according to the police report.

A 2 vehicle crash on highway 19 and county road 101 injured 2 people Saturday afternoon around 3:00 in Redwood Falls.Eugene Armstrong, from Washington State, and Dean Johnson, of Morgan,collided at the intersection. Armstrong and a passenger were taken to the Redwood Falls hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Johnson was not hurt.

A 2 vehicle crash injured two people Saturday morning shortly before 7 … 25 year old William Anderson was headed south on county road 26 in Stearns county, and did not stop for the sign at at county road 192, hitting a vehicle driven by 42 year old Lisa Lenarz of Elrosa … the two drivers suffered non life threatening injuries. Andersons semi rig was loaded with just over 17,000 baby turkeys in crates.

An ATV accident in Douglas County injured two people late last Saturday night.The accident happened near Holmes City southwest of Alexandria. One victim was treated at the scene and flown to St. Cloud. The other victim walked to a nearby home to get help, and was then taken to an area hospital. The accident is currently under investigation.

It’s a busy agenda as the Willmar school board meets today at 4:30 in
the Willmar Education and Arts center board room. A number of personnel appointments, transfers, leave requests and resignations will take place, along with discussion on the operating levy, and the Willmar Civic Center Master plan.
