Today is primary election day here in Minnesota as voters will choose which candidates will be on the November election ballot. Mayoral candidates, county commissioners, candidates for governor and legislative seats will be on the ballot. To find out where your polling place is, log on at www.pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us. You can register at the polling place by showing a proper ID, such as a driver’s license.
At the Willmar school board meeting this week, the board voted to place a $45.10 per pupil operating levy on the ballot in November. And the board set an operating levy of $176.26 per pupil for 5 years. For a total of $201.51 per pupil. The levy that was approved ten years ago for that amount will be expiring soon.
A multi vehicle accident on I 94 injured three people yesterday afternoon around 2:00. A pickup & trailer had pulled over when the trailer blew a tire. A family member in another vehicle pulled over and put flares in the roadway. A vehicle then slowed in traffic and was rear ended by a car, which was hit by another car, which was hit by an SUV. The 2 cars spun out and were hit by a semi, which then hit the parked trailer. 3 people, one from Texas, another from South Dakota, and a person from Bloomington, Mn. Suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Anyone interested in deer can talk with area wildlife managers from the DNR at meetings scheduled around Minnesota. Open house style meetings will be held in Watson Tuesday the 21st of August from 6- 8pm at the Appleton/Lac Qui Parle DNR headquarters on 20th St. NW. In New London on Tuesday August 28th from 11 am to 4pm at the DNR Wildlife office at Sibley State Park. And in Glenwood on Thursday September 6th from 6-8pm at the DNR office on north Lakeshore drive.
The DNR has confirmed the invasive algae “starry stonewart” in Pleasant Lake, near Annandale in Wright County. There are now 13 lakes in the state where the plant has been confirmed. The plant was founded in two patches while officials were checking out a report of zebra mussels in the lake, which turned out to be negative.
