The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry says that minimum wages rates will be adjusted for inflation on the first of January 2019. Small business, as well as the training wage and youth wage will .17 cents an hour to $8.04. Large employer minimum wage will go up .21 cents an hour to $9.86. An estimated 219,000 jobs, not including those in Minneapolis, will be affected.

The State Fair continues through Labor Day, and taking a look back in time, the fair in its first two decades, rotated between towns in southern Minnesota. The 1884 fair in Owatonna that did not go well solidified the thinking that a permanent home should be found. The Twin Cities was chosen with converging rail lines making for easy transportation to the fair. Back in the day, there were air shows complete with wing walkers and stunt fliers at the state fair, and a building used then, the hanger, is busy this year history of the hanger, now re-done with music, food, beer and more.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s office arrested 26 year old Jeremy Nordberg of Willmar last Friday night on a charge of drug possession, fleeing on foot, and warrants from three agencies. Also arrested was 28 year old Patrick Stanley of Willmar for warrants from three agencies. The arrests were made in Litchfield on East 2nd Street.

Sears will be closing 46 stores around the country, including 33 Sears locations and 13 Kmarts. The company said all the stores are losing money and will be shut down in November. None of the closings are in Minnesota. In the past year, Sears has closed almost 400 stores, due in part to declining mall traffic, not enough on-line sales, lack of investment in the stores and heavy pension costs.

The Minnesota DNR will offer 16 parcels of land for sale at 3 public auctions in October and November. Auctions will be held in Grand Rapids, Wadena and St. Paul. The properties that’ll be up for bidding include unimproved recreational land around the state including Benton and Big Stone counties in central and western Minnesota.
