October 2018 Happenings

Litchfield Fire Department Open House is Thursday night October 11th.  Michele and her gang will be there with animals. The event is from 6 p.m. -8 p.m. This is always a fun event. If you can help volunteer, please contact Michele at volunteercoordinator.hskmc@gmail.com

Our 2nd Annual French Toast Breakfast will be Sunday October 14th from 8 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. This event will be at the Litchfield American Legion. We will be serving french toast, sausages, juice and coffee. Prices are: Kids age 12- adult: $7.00 and Kids age 6-11: $3.50. All the money raised will go to help the shelter animals.

 We are Selling Raffle Tickets:  Tickets are $10 each and available from any board member or at the shelter. Drawing will be Oct 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the French Toast Breakfast at Litchfield American Legion. Please call the shelter if you are interested in purchasing any tickets. You do not need to be present to win, but come over anyways for some good eats.

Ladies Night at Runnings will be Thursday evening October 18th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. We will be at both the Willmar Store and the Litchfield Store. We will have animals onsite at both locations. Let Michele know if you would like to help at this fun event.

Thank you to everyone who donated craft items, pumpkins, food and their singing voices for our First Annual Fall Festival. The weather was cool but people came out and had a great time. Just over $975 was raised.

Training for New Shelter Volunteers
Tuesday Oct. 9th at 4:15 p.m.
Tuesday October 23rd at 3:45
Saturday October 27th at 12:00 p.m.

We can always use volunteers to help at the shelter or with offsite events. Trainings are approximately 60 mins long. Trainings are listed above and we need to have volunteers leave at the end of the training if we are closing. You only need to attend one training. Families are encouraged to participate. There is a form that needs to be filled out at shelter or online at www.thehskmc.com. Kids that are 12 and older can volunteer without an adult present, but their time is limited to 2 hours per visit. All trainings are held at the Hawk Creek Animal Shelter. You do not need to pre-register. Persons 17 years of age & under must have a parent or guardian sign the form. Children 11 & under need to be accompanied by an adult.

Pet Therapy Visits:

  • Thursday October 4th 1:30 at Club Suites, 2:30 at Bethesda Memory Care
  • Wednesday October 17th 1: 00 at Rice Care Center, 2:00 at Scandia House
  • Thursday October 18th: 1:30 Brookdale, 2:30 at Copperleaf
  • Wednesday October 24th: 12:45 at C.A.R.E.S., 2:00 at Bethesda Grand

Please Join Us!! We are always looking for animal handlers. The residents truly enjoy it and so do the animals and volunteers.

MNSNAP (MN Spay and Neuter Assistance Program) The only remaining 2018 date is November 12th.  Stay tuned for 2019 dates. Please tell your family, friends, and co-workers about this low cost spay/neuter program. Register animals now as the calendar fills up. We are collecting them and turning them in to receive a percentage of the total purchase.  Cori Heacock who is a Meeker County Administrator Assistant has a box at her window in the County Building. Anyone in the Litchfield community can stop by and drop their receipts anytime during normal business hours of M-F 8a – 4:30p.  Otherwise, mail them to the Hawk Creek Animal Shelter at P.O.   • If you live in Willmar, don’t forget to visit the Willmar City Dog Park. Across from Taunton Stadium and West Central Industries.

  • Marie Lingl at Fancy Coats also has a very large dog park, membership fees applicable.

  • There are several dog training classes that are offered in the area.

  • Watch for us in the West Central Tribune and in the Litchfield Independent Review for our featured Pet of the Week.

  • Listen for us every Friday morning at 8:10 on Big Country 100.3 as we do Pet of the Week on the air. We are also on Open Mic the second Wednesday of every month, 10 a.m. on KWLM Radio.

If you haven’t become a member of the Humane Society, please consider becoming one today!  We have several membership levels.  Memberships help us provide care to the animal that come into our shelter and helps us run programs that benefit people and animals.

The full Board of Directors meet the 4th Thursday of the month; January, February, April, May, July, August, October, and November at 5:45 p.m. at the Kandiyohi County Historical Society meeting room. For the March, June, September, and December meetings, they are held at the Meeker County Court House building in the lower level meeting rooms.

The shelter is open Tuesday through Fridays 12 noon until 6:00 p.m., Saturday and Sundays noon until 4:00 p.m. We are closed on Mondays and major Holidays.
