30 year old Zach Kopel of Danube was involved in an accident on highway 59 In northwest Minnesota Tuesday evening around 6pm. Kopel was driving a combine that was hit by 79 year old Norm Dahl of Mahnomen. Dahl was turning to go south on 59 following behind a big rig and didn’t see the combine. Dahl suffered non-life threatening injuries. Kopel was not hurt.

According to a new Minnesota poll, 70 of those surveyed want the option to buy in to MinnesotaCare, compared to 11% who oppose it. The poll found overwhelming support for the idea across all ages, geographic regions and partisan affiliation. Senator Tony Lourey of Kerrick said the system as it is faces serious challenges, with a high number of Minnesotans that are priced out of the current market.

The Southwest Minnesota Arts Council has awarded $101,697.00 in grants for a number of projects throughout southwest and west central Minnesota. Recipients of grant money include The Meander Art Crawl that happens along the upper Minnesota River; the Prairie Arts Chorale that includes events in Montevideo, Olivia and Redwood Falls. The Willmar Area Arts Council, PFF of Willmar, Willmar Community Ed and the Willmar area symphonic Orchestra, and the Madison Arts Council.

Food recalls continue to make the news with a number of products including- Cedar’s Mediterranean foods Chickpea salad, Ruiz Foods beef and poultry taquito’s, Caito Foods salad and bowl products, chicken & beef products from Simple Foods, Buddy’s Kitchen pork & chicken products, Bakkavor foods meat and poultry products, and a number of Hy-Vee Grocery meat and potato items. Temporary off highway vehicle trail closures in some areas will be in November with the upcoming firearms deer hunting season according to the DNR. All-terrain vehicles, off highway motorcycles and registered off road vehicles will be affected. Restrictions apply to state forest trails and access routes, but not state forest roads. Licensed deer hunters may still use the routes while hunting before legal shooting time, and from 11 am to 2 pm and after legal shooting hours. Contact the DNR for more info.

According to a Brookings Institute study, Minnesota and North Dakota experienced some of the most growth among heartland states from 2010 to 2016. The survey included 19 states. Minnesota had the lowest poverty rate out of the 19 states and 4th lowest in the country. Minnesota was also a leader in education and saw a 3 percent growth in the number of workers with a bachelor’s degree, 34.8%.

The City of Willmar Public Works Dept reminds you that 22nd Street Southwest will be closed between 19th Ave and Willmar Ave SW for work on the trunk storm sewer project. The road will be closed for about two weeks, weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured to county road 5.
