An accident near Cold Spring on County Road 2 injured 30 year old Shane Vanheel of St. Cloud. He went off the road due to snow and ice and hit a large pine tree head on. Vanheel was taken to the St. Cloud hospital with a leg injury. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Yesterday morning the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department got a call of a person on at ATV that went through the ice on Big Kandi Lake. The person was about 200 yards out from the south shore. A number of responders were on hand and the Blomkest Fire Dept. sent people into the water to get the man out. The ATV driver, 49 year old William Wurtz of Hanska was airlifted to St. Cloud. He’s expected to be ok!!

 

24 year old Alexander Gamez is facing three new felony charges for sexually abusing 2 boys. Gamez is already in the” Kandiyohi County jail already after being sentenced last month for child sexual abuse against a young boy. A pretrial hearing on the new charges will be held later in January. Alexandria Police received numerous calls of a possible threat of violence at the Alexandria middle school yesterday. Police and school officials investigated throughout the day and found no credible threat after conducting many interviews. The Police do say that the investigation is active and ongoing. Findings will eventually be turned over to the Douglas County Attorney’s Office.

 

25 year old Ashley Valadez of Willmar pleaded guilty in court yesterday to a felony charge of deprivation of custodial rights, with other kidnapping charges dropped. She had been involved with her boyfriend in kidnapping a boy last summer. Valadez also agreed to testify at the trial of her co-defendant, 22 year old Jose Sanchez, in February. The two were arrested last June.

A couple of interesting calls came in to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s office last night——-people reported seeing a bear in Spicer, around highway 23 and county road ten. The DNR is aware of the sightings. The calls came in around 6:30 last night.

Slippery roads made for some bad driving the past couple of days-accidents were reported north of Willmar where 71 and 23 split. An accident was reported on 23 near New London. The City of Willmar reported accidents. And last night around 6:30, an accident at the highway 23 & 9 intersection near New London injured 3 people. One had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The Renville County Sheriff’s office and the Morton fire department were called to a combine fire 4 miles northwest of Morton. The driver, 54 year old Brad Jansen of rural Bird Island was driving the combine south on 330th st. when he smelled something burning. After stopping and getting out, he saw the fire and tried to put it out but could not. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is not known.
