On Friday night, the Renville County Sheriff’s Department and the Brown-Lyon-Redwood-Renville Emergency Unit/SWAT team were called to Sacred Heart where a man with a warrant out for his arrest was possibly hiding. 38 year old Dwight Steele of Elk River was found last Friday night in a house in the 400 block of First Avenue in Sacred Heart. He initially would not surrender but once officer gained entry he was arrested without incident. Steele has a number of charges against him. Also arrested were two others that were in the house, arrested for aiding an offender. A third person tried to run but was caught. Names of the three people arrested have not been released.
Last Friday on Lake Oscar in Douglas County, 2 men on a 4 wheeler went through the ice. The Douglas county sheriff’s office responded after getting a call that Steve and Ethan Miller had gone through while trying to return to shore. The 4 wheeler sunk to the bottom while the two men were able to pull themselves out and get to a friend’s fish house to warm up. Due to the fog, they could not tell responders exactly where they were. Police and other responders turned on emergency lights to guide them to shore. Both were checked out and released with no injuries.
MnDOT will host an open house Thursday December 13th from 5-7 in the Community Room at the Pope County Courthouse in Glenwood. They’ll be sharing info and getting feedback on the preliminary design for the proposed highway 29 overpass at the junction of Highways 29 and 55. Maps and other visual displays will be set up at the open house. The public is urged to attend, December 13th in Glenwood from 5-7 at the courthouse.
The Willmar City Council meets today with a work session at five and the council meeting at 7 pm. The truth in taxation public hearing is tonight, along with proposed budget adjustments for 2019; the baker field dugout project, and the wastewater treatment plant.
Road construction for 2018 is officially done in Minnesota according to MnDOT. In our area 18 projects covering 300 miles of road cost around forty million dollars. There will be an open house Tuesday December 11th in Appleton at the Civic Center to talk about the tentative 2021 Highway 12 project between highways 75 and 59. The project would include resurfacing, shoulder widening, snow trap improvements and box culvert replacements. The meeting again will be Dec. 11th from 4:30 until 7 pm at the Appleton Civic Center.
The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners will meet on Wednesday this week at ten.The meeting date is moved because of the Association of Minnesota Counties Conference.
The Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting Thursday December 6th from 9:30 until noon at the Glenwood State Banks conference room. This will be the Implementation Advisory Team Meeting for the Bonanza Valley Groundwater Management Area Plan. The plan outlines steps the DNR will take over the next 5 years to ensure
that groundwater supplies locally remain adequate to meet needs while supporting healthy lakes, streams and wetlands. The meeting again will be held December 6th in Glenwood at the Glenwood State Bank Conference room.
A total of $2.97 million dollars in Grant money has been awarded around Minnesota to help people with disabilities get housing stability. Pope, Stevens, Douglas and neighboring counties received $385,875.00, while in Southwest Minnesota, Kandiyohi, Chippewa, Renville, Meeker, Yellow Medicine, Big Stone, Lac Qui Parle, Swift and others received a grant of $100,000.00 dollars.The money will be distributed over a four year period.
