46 year old Traci Leopold of Willmar was injured after being hit by a car while crossing the street. Leopold was crossing near 9th street and Litchfield Ave. SW around 6:45 am
yesterday. She was in a mid-block area, a non-crosswalk area, when a pickup driven by 67 year old Stephen Stein off Willmar hit her. Leopold suffered non-life threatening injuries. There are no charges against either person at this time.
Oskri Organics Corporation of Wisconsin is recalling certain brands of organic sunflower and tahini butter. It could be contaminated with listeria. A customer told them they had sent the butter in for testing and it came back positive for the bacteria. Officials say to throw it out if you have any. Specific brands can be found on line by googling Oskri Organics Corporation.
Wednesday afternoon just after 12:00, the Appleton Police were called to the airport at Appleton on the report of a plane crash. A 42 year old man from Clear Lake, Wisconsin was trying to land and slid off the runway. After trying to get going again, the plane skidded back off the runway and flipped over. The pilot was not hurt. The plane, a 73′ Cessna had major damage to its top, wings and wheels. The FAA and NTSB are now investigating the incident.
Representative Dave Baker of Willmar has been selected as a national Conference of State Legislators 2019 Opioid Policy Fellow. The program is focused on health policies and programs being addressed by state legislatures across the country to combat the epidemic. Baker will have the opportunity to be a part of a peer learning community and be able to directly engage with leading research and policy experts in the field.
More fresh shrimp will be raised locally as Paul Damhoff, who lives south of Willmar, has created “Simply Shrimp”, becoming one of a handful of shrimp raising operations in Minnesota. Eyebrows were raised when Damhoff ordered 20 above ground swimming
pools to convert into his shrimp operation. Everyone from his credit card company to the FedEx guy to the swimming pool retailer questioned whether the order was a mistake or not. Damhoff has fitted the pools, set up in his barn, with a homemade system of pumps and air bubblers to circulate the water for the pacific white shrimp.
A new judge will be seated in Renville County for Minnesota’s 8th Judicial district. According to Governor Mark Dayton. Laurence Stratton, assistant Renville County Attorney, will replace Randall Slieter was appointed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. The 8th district covers Kandiyohi, Renville, Chippewa, Big Stone, Meeker, Pope, Grant, Swift, Stevens, Lac Qui Parle, Wilkens, Traverse and Yellow Medicine counties.
Senator Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake has been reappointed Chair of the Agriculture, Rural Development & Housing Finance Committee. Westrom has served as chair since early 2017. His committee will also have the added responsibility of overseeing funding for rural broadband expansion in Minnesota. The 2019 session at the Capitol in St. Paul gets underway next Tuesday.
