The man fatally shot in Miltona this past Tuesday morning by Douglas County deputies was 27 year old Tyler Schmidtbauer. Police had been called to a domestic disturbance at 437 2nd Ave. North in Miltona. The deputies were not hurt and are on standard administrative leave.

38 year old William Synowczynski of Appleton pleaded guilty to 3 felony counts stemming from two armed standoffs with police in July of 2017 and February of 2018. He will be sentence on the 5th of April.

The trip home took a bit longer for some juniors and seniors from Central Minnesota Christian School of Prinsburg. The students had been on a trip to the state capitol and were headed home when they were involved in a chain reaction accident in the Lowry tunnel. No one was injured, and the bus sustained minor damage and was able to be used to get everyone home.

A Kandiyohi County strategic planning meeting will be held at the Little Crow golf course hotel on Thursday March 7 th . Topics and discussions will be held on strengths, upcoming challenges, core values and the mission statement, a strategic planning approach and priority focus areas and more. Heather Bandeen of the Association of Minnesota Counties will be the facilitator. The meeting runs from 8:30-4pm Thursday March 7 th at Little Crow.

According to State Representative Dean Urdahl of rural Grove City, his bill requiring Civics class to be a for-credit class for Juniors or Seniors in high school has the support of over half of the Minnesota House. Urdahl, a former history teacher, said the Minnesota Dept. of Education will begin collecting data from an already required 50-question civics test that Minnesota students take between grades 7 and 12. The data will help assess student’s civics knowledge in Minnesota.

The National Farmers Union will convene its 117 th convention this Sunday in Bellevue, Washington. 41 Minnesota Farmers Union members will be on hand including Cindy and JoshVanDerPol of Kerkhoven and Tim and Connie Velde of Granite Falls. Minnesota MFU president Gary Wertish of Renville will make the trip and says it’ll be important to see how other states are dealing with a prolonged period of low farm income. The convention runs through next Tuesday and will have more than 400 Farmers Union members on hand from across the country.

Legislation authored by House Majority leader Ryan Winkler and state Senator Ron Latz that would ban private prisons in Minnesota was heard in the House Corrections division earlier this week and was held over for inclusion in a future corrections bill. Winkler said we deserve strong public safety and private prison companies fail to deliver. Investigations have found terrible conditions in private prisons around the country from Idaho to Ohio.
Locally, area politicians Tim Miller of Prinsburg and Andrew Lang of Olivia have been working on getting the state to buy, or lease to buy for Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, which closed down a few years ago.
