Tuesday morning around 9:15 am a house fire was reported to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office. Firemen from Watkins, Eden Valley, and Kimball responded to the home in the 36700 block of 653 rd Ave. The home, owned by 50 year old Kevin Root of rural Watkins, was a total loss. The state Fire Marshall is investigating.

Glenwood Police officer Cody Rupert is being hailed as a hero after pulling a man from a burning apartment recently in Glenwood. A fire in a 5 unit apartment building was reported initially as a fire in an oven, but after no one answered the door, Rupert went in and found a room filled with smoke, a man on the floor and fire climbing a wall. He pulled the man out, then went back and knocked on doors. 2 other apartments had people in them, all of whom escaped. By that time, other responders who heard Rupert’s radio calls were on the scene. The victim was taken to the Glenwood hospital. Officer Rupert also had to be treated for smoke inhalation and spent a night in the hospital. He’s been with the Glenwood PD for 4 and a half years.

40 year old Ryan Moore of Starbuck, a level 3 sex offender, was arrested in Starbuck. An undercover Pope County Deputy had gotten a random request via social media from Moore, who thought he was communicating with a juvenile under the age of 15. Moore was arrested and was in court yesterday to face a felony charge of electronic solicitation of children.

Tuesday just after 5 pm the Meeker County Sheriff’s Dept. responded to an accident at county road 28 & 205th st. 18 year old Alana Benson of Litchfield rear-ended a car driven by 62 year old Elayne Braband of rural Litchfield. Braband was stopped in the driving lane.
A passenger, Tim Braband, suffered minor injuries.

With spring planting on the horizon, the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation is asking corn growers to consider joining the standing corn rows program to help control blowing and drifting snow on state and federal highways next winter. MnDOT pays farmers on a per acre basis. Compensation in the past has been anywhere from one to two thousand dollars. More info is available on the MnDOT website.

And, here’s a sign of better weather to come, all be it a ways off on the calendar. Minnesota’s Pheasant hunter opener planning committee is looking for landowners in the Austin area with grasslands or wetlands to participate in next October’s opener, October 11th and 12th. The planning committee is looking for places for hunters to look for pheasants within 20 miles of Austin. The land will be hunted on the 12th with invited hunters led by local hosts, which may include to landowner.
