An accident near St. Joseph last Friday evening took the life of 54 year old Stacy Meyer of Freeport. Meyer collided with a vehicle driven by 46 year old Jon Grace of St. Joseph, who suffered minor injuries. The accident happened at county road 3 and Norway road around 6:50 pm last Friday night.

2 kayakers overturned in the Mississippi river near the Sauk Rapids Bridge Sunday around 11:30 am. 23 year old Leo Johnson of Sauk Rapids got stuck in a hydraulic pool and went under at least 3 times before being able to get out. The other kayaker, 23 year old Anna Rosburg of Cambridge was able to get to shore. Johnson was treated for minor injuries at the St. Cloud hospital.

Road striping operations are underway according to the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation. District 8 includes Kandiyohi, Meeker, Chippewa, Renville, Yellow Medicine, Redwood, Lyon and other counties. Striping is a moving operation and should have little impact on traffic but will be moving at a slower pace. Work should be done around the end of June weather permitting.

Phone and email scams continue to make the news around the area. Sheriff’s Offices reports person got an email from a Parish Priest who was asking for gift cards to help people in need. The victim wound up buying a couple hundred dollar gift cards and sent one, but not the other. Another scam involved computer hacking after a person had tried to book plane tickets from Delta and then got a call from a person, supposedly from Delta saying there were problems and to give info over the phone. The victim gave them a credit card number but then realized what was going on and cancelled the card. Police were able to call the scammer back and tried to engage them and find out more, but they got hung up on. And, a person got scammed to the tune of $23,000.00 after purchasing gift cards when contacted about a vehicle registered in her name was involved in a drug and fraud situation in Texas. The person was threatened with a warrant for arrest and bought the cards, but shredded them after a couple stores said it may be a scam. The victim is now out the money. The scam caller number was an untraceable internet number.

Hundreds of Minnesota students are joining school kids nationwide for national bike to school day today. Around 200 schools have registered for students to ride or walk to school along with parents, teachers, community partners and elected officials. Bike to school day is part of the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation safe routes to schools program. Drive safely, and keep an eye out for all who are biking or walking to and from school today.

The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners will meet today at 9 am at the Health and Human Services Building in Willmar. The agenda includes the remote electronic alcohol monitoring grant; The county office building remodel, a resolution on the roundabout approval in Willmar, construction agreements and committee reports. The health and human services committee meets at 9, and the board meeting will begin at 10.

The Ridgewater College Foundation is one of two statewide recipients of the 2019 Community Partnership award from the Minnesota Literacy Council. A ceremony was held in St. Paul April 30th . Ridgewater partnered with the Hutchinson Adult Basic Education Program and the number of area students earning their general education Diplomas in the past year has increased by 56%. The foundation set up a GED testing Fund to help students struggling to pay the testing fees, which can run $120.00 per student. Thanks to donations, they were able to grant 172 vouchers for free testing to students.
