The New London Fire Dept. was called to a grass fire north of Long Lake not far from Hawick around 3:15 yesterday afternoon. About 6 acres burned with no buildings damaged. The Spice Fire Dept. assisted at the scene. Someone burning brush may have caused the fire. Casey McCoy, DNR fire prevention supervisor says even though we’ve had rain recently the grass has not greened up everywhere yet and with pine needles and leaves mixed in, it burns rapidly.

Highways 59 and 79 in Elbow Lake will be closed today as work crews remove pavement. Southbound highway 55 is also closed for another couple of weeks as workers complete the storm sewer and concrete project. Public meetings are held each Tuesday at noon for construction updates. They are held at the Grant Co. Office Building in Elbow Lake.

Last Friday night around 8:30 the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office got a call of a motorcycle accident on county road 11. 30 year old Julia Zaka’an of Eden Valley hit a deer and was thrown from the bike. She did not have a helmet on and was airlifted to St. Cloud with critical injuries.

A driver from Avon wound up in Lower Spunk Lake around 8:00 last Friday night. His car went off county road 9, hit an approach in the ditch and then continued through a yard and eventually going down a hill & into the lake. A first responder and others who were nearby helping him get out without injury from the crash. It’s believed he had a medical issue that caused the crash.

MnDOT reports that U.S. Highway 12 from the 75/7 junction in Ortonville, to Big Stone County Road 23, is now open. It had been closed since early April due to flooding. In Kandiyohi County, county road 135, which runs north and south from highway 23 to highway 55, is closed SW of Regal due to a culvert being washed out.

The DNR recently tagged 1800 walleye on Lakes Washington, Manuella, and Stella in Stearns County. The tagging was done in April on walleye 10 inches or longer. If you catch any, you’re asked to notify the Hutchinson area fisheries supervisor Scott Mackenthun. The # is on the tag. There’ll also be a creel clerk at Lake Manuella and Stella Lake surveying
anglers this summer. This is the first of a 3 year study on the lakes.
