An accident Wednesday night around 7:30 pm killed 32 year old Nick Hervin of Morris, who was fishing from shore on Long Lake in Stevens County. He was hit by a vehicle driven by 40 year old Josh Dewald of Brooten. Dewald was headed east before going into the opposite lane, hitting a parked truck on county road 10, then going down the embankment and hitting Hervin. Dewald was arrested on multiple warrants according to police.
The Kandiyohi County Traffic Education and Safety team reports that “joyride” will be in operation again this summer, offering safe rides home from the Spicer Legion, Zorbaz and O’Neil’s. The program started in 2014, offering rides that cost only $5.00 with the tickets sold by servers or bartenders at the 3 businesses. Steph Felt says the program has now served over 1400 riders. Felt will join us on Community Roundtable on AM 1590/FM105.7 this Sunday morning at 7:30.
A restraining order sought by an 18 year old woman against former Montevideo Police Chief Adam Christopher, 47, was denied by Judge Charles Glasrud earlier this month.
The woman said Christopher had been harassing her. A temporary restraining was put in place last November. The alleged harassing took place beginning back in 2017. Christopher resigned his position last December. The Judge ruled that while the woman felt scared, he also believed that the former Police chief did not know that his texts were being taken as threatening.
26 year old Lynnea Bye off Willmar was sentenced in Willmar this week on a gross misdemeanor drug charge. 2 felony charges were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea to gross misdemeanor. That charge will be dropped if she abides by the probation terms that have been set. She was arrested a year ago along with Rodney Vega, age 29 of Willmar. He was charged with 10 felonies in the case, eventually pleading guilty to two charges with his sentencing set for June 26th .
The 7th annual Mayor’s Bike Ride is taking place later today with Mayor’s from Willmar, New London and Spicer along with others participating. Riders will gather in the parking lot across from Goat Ridge Brewery in New London, the state trail across from Mel’s in Spicer, and at the Foxhole Brew House in Willmar. The ride begins at 5 pm. Six Minnesota businesses have been awarded a total of $1.5 Million dollars from the job creation fund through the Minnesota Dept. of Employment and Economic Development with over 200 jobs being made possible over the next three years. In west central Minnesota, Alexandria Industries was awarded $175,000 to add new equipment and 7300 square ft. of manufacturing space and 11,300 square feet of office space. 14 new jobs will be added. And Garfield Plastics was awarded $175,000 to build a 13,000 square foot addition and add 20 new jobs.
The DNR has wrapped up its chronic wasting disease testing on deer with just over 8,000 samples collected and tested from November 2018 thru April 2019. Across the state, 34 samples tested positive. 27 were from southeastern Minnesota, deer permit 603. 6 were in southeast Minnesota outside of the 603 area, and one tested positive in north central Minnesota. 51 have tested positive now since 2016.
Elk hunters can apply for a chance to hunt elk in Northwest Minnesota this fall and winter, with additional anterless permits available and a new December hunting season. Hunters can apply for one of 27 elk tags through Friday June 14 at any license agent, the DNR license center, online or by phone. The DNR also has an elk hunting web page.
